Description

The once mighty Padma River is no more. This river has become one of the most important rivers of the country. Due to the decrease in the flow of water upstream, now a large part of the Padma flowing through Rajshahi city in the dry season has become sandy.This change has threatened the lives, livelihood and environment of the people living on the banks of the Padma. The river on which the sailing boats once used to sail now has a limited number of boats. The passengers have to come to the bank of the river through the huge char pari in the motorized vehicle and board the boat.

Fishermen are now out of work due to a shortage of fish in the river. Many people are changing careers. The volume of the Pramatta River has been gradually decreasing over the past few decades due to the reduction of upstream water pressure due to the Farakka Dam in India. This year, the crisis has been exacerbated by the sudden decrease in the flow of water in the Padma during the dry season.
